    • This is an annoying problem, though as you show in your example, a fair share of the fault lies with the customer, who is willing to have management make the purchase.

C/C++ and sizes of types

Every so often, I get asked questions along the lines of one of these:
Question type #1:
I need a type that is exactly n bytes/bits long. How do I get this?
Question type #2:
On machine x, the size of some type(usually wchar_t) is wrong! How do I fix it?

  • And God forbid you abbreviate "Thanks in advance" as TIA. That's right, 14-year-old me, I'm talking to *you*.
  • There are two big problems. People don't appreciate your time and they don't know how to help themselves.

    People really need to understand and learn how to find information to help themselves before jumping to conclusions. However it never hurts to be helpful in the situation where they don't know how to help themselves. Don't let it eat your soul.
